Evolve Checkmat Rancho Mission Viejo BJJ Academy is a beginner friendly Brazilian Jiu Jitsu / Muay Thai Team & Family that values friendship and respect. We pride ourselves in our dedication to teach Men, Women and Kids how to develop a high level of martial arts expertise, physical fitness and self-defense skills. Our mission at Evolve Checkmat Mission Viejo BJJ/ MT Academy is to create a clean, safe, and technically sound environment for learning and developing the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & Muay Thai. We are committed to working with all members of the community regardless of previous experience or physical ability. We have committed our lives to this line of work because we know the positive impact practicing BJJ/ MT can have and that is the kind of contribution that we would like to make in our community.

Our purpose is to provide you with the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai instruction in Orange County. Whether your goal is to learn self-defense, become a professional fighter, be a tournament Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu / submission grappling champion, or just get in shape while having fun; we can help you meet your goals!!

There are two principal goals at Evolve Checkmat OC: First, we want each member to reach their full martial arts and athletic potential. Second, we want each member to know and feel even though they are participating in what some may consider an individual sport, they are in fact part of a Team, a family. We make each other grow stronger to help each other grow as athletes, martial artists, business men and women and as people.

You will be surrounded by many people who have dedicated years of their lives to studying, training, teaching and competing in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai Boxing, Kickboxing, Wrestling & MMA.

Coach Todd has over 26 years of Martial Arts experience & training. He has trained with several Masters of the Arts in and out of the country. He currently is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt under 6x Brazilian Jiu Jitsu World Champ, Lucas Leite of the World renowned competition Team CHECKMAT. He has also earned the rank 4th Degree Black Belt in Shaolin Kenpo that he received at the Shaolin Temple in China in 2006. Having competed in several championship tournaments and placing in the top three podium, he has a wealth of knowledge and experience to share with his students.
He continues to train now harder than ever as well as compete and strive to be the best coach trainer. He helps everyone find the best version of themselves. And with that, realize their personal best. He is a husband and father of 3 beautiful children who also train at the academy in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai, as well as a great Coach & Friend. He will continue to mentor the future of our children and create respectful, confident, goal driven and hardworking adults of our society.

Coach Matt’s love of Jiu Jitsu started in early childhood and continues to grow as he learns, competes, and coaches kids’ classes at Evolve.
Coach Matt was born and raised in Orange County and currently lives in Laguna Niguel, CA with his wife, who is expecting their first baby this fall!
After learning the power of exercise and nutrition to overcome his own chronic pain and autoimmune issues, Coach Matt became inspired to mentor others in health and fitness. For the past 7 years, he has been using his knowledge and experience to help people achieve their personal potential. His coaching incorporates nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle changes that help build the habits that create life-changing and sustainable benefits.
